Over 200 Foot Pilgrims Arrive at Lira Cathedral Ahead of Martyrs Day Trek to Namugongo

Lira, Uganda | More than 200 foot pilgrims from various parishes in Lira Diocese have arrived at the Uganda Martyrs Cathedral ordination grounds in Lira City as part of preparations for this year’s Uganda Martyrs Day celebration in Namugongo.

According to Goddy Akio, the spokesperson for the Lira Diocese foot pilgrims, the diocese has so far registered a total of 885 pilgrims who are expected to make the long spiritual journey on foot to Namugongo.

The group includes four children and pilgrims from parishes such as Anyeke, Otwal, Ngai, Teboke, Orum, Alanyi, Abongodyang, Ngetta, Aputi, Amolatar, Dokolo, and Bala.

Akio noted that women constitute the majority of the pilgrims, and more arrivals are expected over the coming days.

He expressed gratitude for the safe journey of the early arrivals and confirmed that the official reception window at the cathedral runs from May 12th to 15th. The full group will set off for Namugongo on Friday, May 16th.

Preparations are currently in full swing at their designated center at St. Kizito Primary School, where identity tags and commemorative T-shirts are being issued.

As part of their spiritual readiness, the pilgrims are scheduled to participate in a retreat at Uganda Martyrs Cathedral today, Wednesday, May 14th.

Some of the pilgrims shared their joy upon arriving safely and reflected on the spiritual significance of the pilgrimage.

Many said they are praying for peace in their homes and communities as they prepare to walk in the footsteps of the Uganda Martyrs.
