Oyam, Uganda – Oyam District local government has reinforced its commitment to improving agricultural extension services by procuring motorcycles worth 71 million Ugandan shillings under an Agricultural Grant.
These motorcycles were handed over to extension staff across Acaba, Abok, Iceme and Loro sub-counties to enhance service delivery and agricultural mechanization at the grassroots level.
During the handover ceremony, Patrick Ocen Ebong, the Assistant Resident District Commissioner of Oyam, emphasized the need for accountability and responsible use of the motorcycles.
He cautioned officers against diverting them for personal use and urged them to utilize the resource for its intended purpose – training and supporting farmers in adopting modern agricultural techniques.
Joel Augustine Ojedroa Oyoa, the Deputy Chief Administrative Officer of Oyam, reaffirmed that the motorcycles are meant to facilitate agricultural extension workers in providing essential services across the district.
He encouraged recipients to focus on training farmers in mechanized farming and the adoption of innovative agricultural technologies.
Cox Albino Ogwal, the District Production Officer, highlighted that annual procurement of motorcycles for extension staff is part of the district’s long-term strategy to improve agricultural service delivery.
He stressed that providing mobility to field officers ensures they can reach and support farmers effectively, ultimately leading to increased agricultural productivity.
Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Samuel Omodo, an extension worker in charge of the veterinary department at Abok Sub-County, expressed gratitude for the initiative.
He emphasized that the motorcycles would significantly improve agricultural extension services, benefiting local farmers and boosting food production.
