Lira, Uganda – The head of Ngetta Baby’s Home in Lira City East Division has expressed deep concern over the increasing number of child abandonment cases in the area.
Sr. Demmy Frances shared this troubling information during an exclusive interview with our news reporter, following the recent abandonment of a one-year-old boy in Ireda Lumumba cell just two days ago.
She highlighted that since July this year, there has been a noticeable rise in the number of infants left behind by their parents.
Currently, the home is caring for approximately 31 abandoned children aged between 0 and 3 years.
Of these, 11 are housed at the center, while 20 are being cared for externally.
Sr. Demmy emphasized that the surge in abandonment cases is unprecedented for their facility.
Despite the challenges, she expressed gratitude towards the local police and probation officers for their efforts to combat this issue, noting their commitment to identifying those responsible for abandoning newborns.
Additionally, Sr. Demmy urged parents, particularly mothers, to seek constructive solutions to their difficulties with partners instead of resorting to abandonment, reminding them that their children could grow up to be future leaders and contributors to society.
She called on the community to act as protectors of children and cautioned men against neglecting their partners when blessed with children, emphasizing that children are a precious gift from God.
In closing, she extended heartfelt thanks to the well-wishers and community members who consistently support Ngetta Baby’s Home, encouraging them to continue their vital work in aiding those in need.
