Otuke, Uganda – Security authorities in Otuke District have arrested four individuals suspected of being part of a gang responsible for widespread criminal activities, including theft, assault and event disruptions in Bar Jobi Subcounty and its surrounding areas.
Assistant Resident District Commissioner (ARDC) Isaac Opio Opeo confirmed the arrests, which followed a community engagement meeting (Baraza) organized to address security concerns in the villages of Otikori, Abongo Dyang, Ogoro and Campipeny.
The operation was led by the Deputy Resident District Commissioner (DRDC) Francis Okwamary and involved local leaders, including Councillor LCV Bar Jobi Subcounty Gaspa Okello.
According to Opio Opeo, community members had raised alarm over a group allegedly involved in waylaying travellers, disrupting social events by hurling stones and consuming food meant for attendees.
The gang is also accused of stealing livestock and engaging in other criminal activities, such as wearing military-style clothing and conducting group training sessions in remote areas.
“We received reports about these gang members and their criminal activities, including theft and violence, which have left many residents in fear. During the Baraza, we devised a plan to apprehend them. Our intelligence identified their drinking spot, leading to the arrest of four suspects,” said Opio Opeo.
The four suspects are currently detained at Otuke Central Police Station as investigations continue.
LC V Councillor of Bar Jobi Subcounty Gaspa Okello expressed his dismay over the group’s actions, citing rampant theft, waylaying, and even rape incidents in his jurisdiction.
“These gangs have terrorized our communities, dispersing people from ceremonies and stealing property. Their arrest is a step toward restoring peace,” said Okello.
Opio called on residents to remain vigilant during the festive season and report any suspicious individuals or activities to security personnel.
Authorities are continuing efforts to track down the group’s additional members, which are believed to number over 120.
This crackdown marks a critical effort by Otuke’s leadership to curb escalating insecurity and protect local communities.
The names of the arrested suspects are being withheld as investigations continue.
