Security Tight as Alebtong Gears Up for Crucial NRM District Elections

Alebtong, Uganda | Security agencies and local authorities in Alebtong District have finalized sweeping preparations ahead of Friday’s highly anticipated NRM District Executive Committee elections, with 420 accredited delegates expected to cast their votes in a tightly managed process.

The voting exercise, set to take place on May 23 at Alebtong Town Council headquarters, comes amid heightened focus on discipline, transparency, and internal party reorganization ahead of the 2026 general elections.

Deputy Resident District Commissioner (D/RDC) Mathias Lutwama, who is overseeing the election’s security arrangements, said the government is committed to ensuring a peaceful and orderly process.

“…We are fully prepared. The pitch where voting will take place has already been secured by police and other security personnel. No unauthorized individuals will be allowed near the polling grounds…,” Lutwama told journalists.

The election will bring together delegates from 14 sub-counties, forming a critical moment for the NRM to renew its grassroots leadership in a district considered pivotal in Lango sub-region politics.

Delegates are expected to begin arriving at 9:30 AM, with a robust filtering system in place to distinguish eligible voters from the general public.

According to the plan, a one-hour window between 10:00 AM and 11:00 AM will be used to verify and clear delegates before voting officially begins at 12:00 PM.

In an effort to ensure discipline and order, the election of NRM’s seven key leagues – including the Youth, Women, Elders, and Persons with Disabilities – will be conducted in phases, followed by the mainstream party leadership elections.

“…This approach guarantees that each league gets the attention it deserves, and it eliminates confusion. Names will be read out individually to authorize entry to the voting area…,” a senior party electoral official confirmed.

To prevent congestion and chaos around the venue, traffic police will be deployed along roads adjacent to the headquarters to direct and control the movement of cars, motorcycles, and bicycles.

Lutwama reiterated that there will be zero tolerance for interference, with anyone found flouting guidelines to face arrest.

“…This is not just an internal party exercise – it’s a test of our district’s democratic maturity and security readiness. We shall not allow hooliganism or political thuggery to derail this important event…,” he warned.

The Alebtong district elections come at a time when the NRM is working to consolidate its internal ranks across the country, especially in regions where party cohesion has been previously tested.

Party insiders see these elections as a strategic step toward building a more disciplined and grassroots-driven NRM chapter in Alebtong, capable of mounting a formidable campaign in the run-up to 2026.

Observers note that the district has recently experienced a surge in political activity, with emerging leaders promising a clean break from past electoral malpractices and factionalism that once threatened the party’s local dominance.
