Soroti City Council Approves UGX 27 Billion Budget for 2025/2026 Financial Year

Soroti, Uganda – Soroti City Council has approved a UGX 27 billion budget for the 2025/2026 financial year, reflecting its commitment to improving education, infrastructure, and healthcare services.

The budget, presented by Hellen Amongin, the Secretary for Finance, Planning, Administration and Investment, prioritizes these key sectors, with education receiving the largest allocation of UGX 14 billion.

This investment will support the rehabilitation and construction of school facilities, including a two-classroom block at Hilders Primary School, a five-stance pit latrine at Onyakai Primary School and a three-classroom block at Soroti Demonstration Primary School.

Additionally, desks will be supplied to Otatai and Moruapesur Primary Schools to enhance the learning environment.

The Works Department has been allocated UGX 2 billion, which will go toward maintaining street lighting, opening and maintaining roads, and completing the city’s drainage system to mitigate flooding.

In the healthcare sector, UGX 2.9 billion has been set aside to complete the construction of Moruapesur Health Centre III and to purchase office furniture for the Health Department, ensuring better working conditions for health professionals.

To finance these projects, Soroti City Council plans to generate revenue from multiple sources, including UGX 3 billion from local revenue collections, UGX 24 billion from central government funding, and UGX 14 million from external financing.

Amongin commended the technical officers for their efficiency in preparing the budget, ensuring its quick approval.

She emphasized the need for transparency in financial planning to ensure funds are effectively utilized for the benefit of the residents.

Council leaders expressed confidence in the budget’s implementation, with Speaker Juliet Agonyo highlighting the city’s 75% project completion rate from 2023 to 2025 as a testament to its dedication to development.

She reaffirmed the council’s commitment to completing ongoing projects to further enhance service delivery.

Mayor Joshua Edogu praised the Speaker for facilitating a smooth council session and urged technical officers to actively engage in fund mobilization to guarantee successful project execution.

He emphasized that transparency and accountability in the use of public funds are crucial in ensuring that planned projects are delivered efficiently.

The UGX 27 billion budget represents a UGX 2 billion increase from the previous year’s allocation of UGX 25 billion, underscoring Soroti City’s growing ambitions.

With increased funding, the council expects to see significant improvements in infrastructure, healthcare services and the education sector, creating a better living environment for its residents.

The approval of this budget marks a significant milestone in Soroti City’s development, ensuring that key projects are implemented to meet the needs of the growing population.
