Lira City, Uganda – A staggering increase in road accidents has shaken the North Kyoga region, leaving a trail of devastation and loss in its wake. According to statistics released by SP Patrick Jimmy Okema, the North Kyoga Region Police PRO, the region has witnessed a significant surge in both fatal and serious road accidents over the first five months of 2024.
From January to May 2024, the North Kyoga region registered a total of 285 road accidents, resulting in 91 deaths, 372 serious injuries, and 24 minor injuries, affecting a total of 467 individuals. The breakdown of these incidents reveals some alarming trends, with Lira and Oyam emerging as the most affected districts.
A total of 80 fatal accidents have been reported, with Lira leading the list with 22 fatal accidents, followed closely by Dokolo with 16. Kole reported 12 fatal accidents, Oyam registered 10, Apac accounted for 5, Alebtong recorded 3, Amolatar reported 2, and Kwania had 5.
A staggering 158 serious accidents have been reported, with Oyam being the most affected with 44 serious accidents. Lira follows closely with 41, Apac had 16 serious accidents, Amolatar reported 18, Kole accounted for 9, and Dokolo had 12.
Dokolo leads in minor accidents, followed by Lira, Oyam, and Apac, which also reported significant numbers of minor accidents.
SP Patrick Jimmy Okema identified several primary causes contributing to the high incidence of road accidents in the region, including:
