Alebtong District, Uganda – In a dramatic turn of events, a planned student strike at Amugu Seed Senior Secondary School was thwarted by the timely intervention of the Alebtong District Police Department on June 4, 2024.
According to sources, students had been planning to strike over longstanding grievances, including deplorable toilet facilities, poor food quality, a lack of science teachers and laboratory equipment, alleged corruption, and the non-payment of locally recruited teachers.
Swift action by the police, led by District Police Commander SSP Mukiza Hillary, diffused the tense situation. Student leaders and school officials, including the deputy headteacher, head prefect, and watchmen, were engaged in discussions, and statements were recorded.
While the situation has been brought under control, preliminary observations suggest a significant gap between the school administration, teachers, and students. The toilet facilities are indeed in a state of disrepair, and the dormitories require maintenance and new bedding.
