Serere, Uganda – The brutal murder of Abiro Rebecca Viola, a Senior Three student at Serere Township Secondary School, has left Serere Town Council in turmoil.
The killing, which happened on the night of February 19, has sparked outrage and calls to halt violence against women.
Mathew Emeru, Local Council I chairperson of Township Cell, Kakus Ward, said Abiro, from Akuja Parish in Kyere Sub County, was found dead under unclear circumstances.
Her body is now at Serere Health Center IV for a postmortem. Police are investigating but have not yet spoken publicly.
“This violence against women has to stop,” Emeru said. “We want the police to catch whoever did this and make them face justice.”
Another local, who stayed anonymous, said, “We can’t let our daughters keep dying. The authorities need to act fast.”
The anger is palpable, with many pushing for swift action.
Abiro’s death has heightened fears about safety for women and girls in Serere.
People say it’s part of a bigger problem and are demanding better protection.
“We’re scared,” one resident admitted. “Something has to change.”
Police silence has only fueled frustration yet the community wants answers and results, not delays.
