Lira, Uganda – Tekwaro Lango has received a major boost in its climate action and food security campaign, thanks to a donation of 10,000 fruit tree seedlings from Roofings Uganda Limited.

The donation, which was delivered this week, reflects growing private sector support for community-driven environmental initiatives in the Lango sub-region.

The seedlings were officially received by the Speaker of Tekwaro Lango, Willie Omodo Omodo, who hailed the gesture as timely and impactful.

He noted that the fruit trees would not only support efforts to restore green cover in the region but also provide households with an opportunity to boost food security and generate additional income.

Omodo urged the 149 clan heads set to be the first recipients to lead by example in nurturing the trees and encouraging their communities to embrace tree planting as a shared responsibility.

Patrick Okullo Okeng, the Minister of Information for Tekwaro Lango, said the institution is committed to ensuring that the seedlings reach communities across the entire Lango ethnic group.

He explained that churches, schools and other community centers in selected districts have been earmarked to receive a portion of the seedlings, with a focus on promoting ownership and participation among local residents.

Joel Agabi, the Tekwaro Lango Minister in charge of Environment, reiterated the urgent need for tree planting as a response to the rising threats of climate change.

He emphasized that planting trees especially fruit-bearing species can restore degraded environments, enhance food availability and increase household incomes over time.

Agabi encouraged individuals and institutions to treat this initiative as a starting point for a broader culture of environmental stewardship.

The leadership of Tekwaro Lango has committed to conducting follow-up visits and sensitization campaigns to support the success of the project.

Local leaders are expected to work closely with communities to ensure that the seedlings are well-maintained and contribute meaningfully to the region’s environmental and economic resilience.

Tekwaro Lango sees this partnership with Roofings Uganda Limited as a powerful example of how traditional institutions and private companies can collaborate to address pressing challenges like climate change, food insecurity and poverty.
