Teso Women Set to Break Free from Poverty with the Eriago Model

Soroti, Uganda – The Ateker Professionals Initiative for Development (APID) has launched the Eriago Model in the Teso sub-region to help women build financial stability through structured savings and investments.

The model encourages women to save for health, education, home development and personal well-being, ensuring families can access medical care, pay school fees, improve living conditions and secure financial independence.

APID emphasizes that the goal is not to provide direct financial aid but to equip women with the skills and mindset needed to manage their own resources effectively.

The organization believes that long-term development must be community-driven rather than dependent on external aid.

At the launch, State Minister for Fisheries Hellen Adoa commended the initiative, recognizing the vital role women play in transforming households.

She, however, urged them to balance financial empowerment with their family responsibilities. While economic independence strengthens families, neglecting traditional roles could create social challenges.

The Eriago Model aligns with the government’s Parish Development Model (PDM), which provides UGX 30 million per parish for women and youth-led economic activities.

However, Richard Elimu, NRM flagbearer for Gweri County, pointed out that many villagers misuse such funds, treating savings groups as short-term financial schemes rather than long-term investment opportunities.

He stressed the need for financial education to ensure sustainability.

Local leaders in Soroti District expressed strong support for the model, emphasizing the importance of financial literacy.

Hellen Agwaro, Women’s Council Chairperson for Gweri Sub-county, highlighted that many households in the region are headed by women who struggle to provide for their families.

She believes this initiative will help them achieve financial security and improve their children’s futures.

APID plans to closely monitor the model’s implementation and collaborate with local leaders to ensure its success.

If the program proves effective, it could be expanded to other poverty-stricken regions in Uganda, offering a sustainable path toward economic transformation.
