Dokolo, Uganda | Dokolo District’s NRM internal elections held yesterday saw several prominent journalists and media personalities from the district, alongside a presidential advisor, fail to secure leadership positions.
Among those who lost include Julius Peter Odur, popularly known as Odur JP from Voice of Lango FM, who came second in the race for NRM Publicity with 205 votes with Raphael Okello, winning the position with 292 votes.
Other media figures who failed to secure NRM Publicity seats include Ogwang Sammy of Dokolo FM with 10 votes, Ouni Jasper of LBS Radio with 14 votes, and David Livingstone Angulu received only 1 vote.
Former Rhino FM manager Martin Okech Ogwal was defeated by Eladu Fred Omiat, Station Manager at LBS Radio, who was elected Youth League Chairperson with 69 votes to Okech Ogwal’s 7 votes.
Presidential Advisor Levi Okodi was decisively defeated by Opio Geoffrey Ekong, who won the NRM Chairperson position for Dokolo District with 398 votes, beating rivals including Ambrose Ogwang (17 votes), Bonny Alilo (96 votes), and Levi Okodi (5 votes).
In her opening remarks, NRM District Registrar Isaac Omara urged voters to take the elections seriously and maintain high discipline.
He assured delegates of a free and fair process and warned against ineligible voters attempting to participate.
RDC Barbara Akech praised the peaceful conduct of the elections and called on all candidates to support the party regardless of the outcomes.
Other elected leaders include:
- Rebecca Arao – NRM Vice Chairperson, who garnered 377 votes, beating Peter Odongo (85), Benson Ojok (28), and George Opio Obote (6).
- Joel Opota Okuma – General Secretary with 297 votes, beating Okello Hillary (218).
- Agnes Owiny – Finance Secretary with 271 votes, beating Joan Bua (255) and Alfred Okello (12).
- Teddy Okot Ogong – Chairperson, Women’s League, elected with 59 votes.
- Eladu Fred Omiat – Youth League Chairperson with 69 votes.
- Eton Rashid – Chairperson, Elders League (unopposed).
- Akello Dolly – Chairperson, Disability League (unopposed).
- Ogweng Innocent – Workers League Chairperson with 24 votes.
After his victory, Opio Geoffrey Ekong thanked Sam Brunos Aliga for stepping down in his favour and pledged to uphold unity and drive the party forward in Dokolo.
Vice Chairperson Rebecca Arao called on all party members to unite and prepare for the forthcoming national elections.
Youth League Chairperson Eladu Fred Omiat committed to enhancing youth engagement and transparency, while Women’s League Chairperson Teddy Okot Ogong vowed to connect women with development organizations.
In neighboring Otuke District, Julius Acon Bua was elected NRM Chairperson with 272 votes, while Dr. Jane Ruth Acheng Ochero, Minister of Health, was unopposed as NRM Chairperson for Lira City.
MP aspirant for Dokolo North Joseph Jones Ogwal Omara, who observed the elections, commended the party structures for electing strong leaders.
He encouraged those who lost not to leave the party but to remain supportive ahead of the upcoming parliamentary elections.
