NAIROBI-KENYA:

In a bid to fortify the longstanding ties between Uganda and Kenya, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni of Uganda was formally received at State House, Nairobi, by his Kenyan counterpart, President William Ruto. The meeting, held this morning, marked a significant milestone in the diplomatic relations between the two neighboring nations.

The day’s agenda commenced with an exclusive tête-à-tête between the two leaders, providing them with a platform to discuss issues of mutual interest and explore opportunities for collaboration. Subsequently, President Museveni and President Ruto engaged in bilateral discussions alongside high-ranking officials from both governments. The talks encompassed a wide array of sectors including transport, infrastructure, trade, investment, immigration, regional integration, peace, security, and counterterrorism strategies.

A pivotal moment during the meeting was the signing of a tripartite agreement pertaining to the importation and transit of refined petroleum products through Kenya to Uganda. This groundbreaking agreement empowers the Uganda National Oil Company (UNOC) to directly import refined petroleum products from producers across various jurisdictions. The agreement is poised to address existing challenges within Uganda’s petroleum sector, fostering enhanced efficiency and reliability.

In a post-discussion press briefing, President Museveni extended his gratitude to President Ruto for extending the invitation for bilateral discussions. He underscored the importance of bilateral cooperation in promoting regional development and stability, emphasizing the necessity for continued collaboration to address common challenges and capitalize on growth opportunities.

President Museveni contextualized the signed agreements within the framework of historical missions dating back over six decades. He emphasized the evolution from the foundational focus on “Uhuru na Umoja” (Independence and Unity) to the contemporary pursuit of integration aimed at prosperity through wealth creation and market access. Additionally, he underscored the significance of strategic security through political integration and the concept of brotherhood or “Undugu” as crucial historical missions for Africa.

President Ruto echoed President Museveni’s sentiments, expressing optimism about the signed agreements and their potential to bolster the already robust relations between Kenya and Uganda. He reiterated the commitment of both leaders to fulfilling their obligations to maximize benefits for their respective countries and citizens.

President Museveni’s visit to Nairobi and the ensuing discussions with President Ruto underscore the unwavering commitment of Uganda and Kenya to work collaboratively towards achieving shared historical missions. The signing of agreements and protocols marks a significant stride towards realizing the vision of creating wealth, ensuring market access, and strengthening political integration within the East African region.
