UPDF 5th Division Cleans Lira City as Part of Tarehe Sita Celebrations

Lira City, Uganda – The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) 5th Division has today engaged in a massive cleanup exercise in Lira City as part of activities leading up to the 44th Tarehe Sita celebrations.

The exercise focused on cleaning Lira Bus Park & Lira Main Market, removing garbage that had accumulated over time and was blocking drainage systems and creating an unpleasant environment for traders and passengers.

The event, which saw soldiers sweeping, collecting rubbish, and unblocking drainage channels, was attended by local leaders and members of the public who praised the army’s commitment to community service.

Speaking during the exercise, Capt. Edwin Mawanda, the Public Information Officer of the UPDF 5th Division, emphasized the army’s strong relationship with the civilian population.

“The UPDF is a People’s Army. We are here to serve and work together with the citizens of Uganda. Today’s activities show our commitment not only to national security but also to the well-being of the communities we serve,” Capt. Mawanda said.

He further highlighted that this year’s main national Tarehe Sita celebrations will be held in the Greater Masaka City, but the UPDF is actively engaging in community service activities across all its operational zones, including Northern Uganda.

The cleanup exercise received special recognition from Benard Anyeko Masanga, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of Lira Urban Transporters SACCO Ltd, who lauded the UPDF for restoring hygiene at the Bus Park.

“We are extremely grateful to the UPDF for clearing away the rubbish that had stayed here for a long time. The drainage system was blocked, making the place dirty and smelly. Their effort has greatly improved the environment,” Anyeko stated.

He attributed the drainage blockage to broken metal covers that were originally placed to prevent garbage from entering the drainage channels.

He urged local authorities to restore these protective structures to ensure long-term cleanliness.

The event also saw participation from the Uganda Police Force (UPF), which worked alongside the UPDF soldiers and civilians.

Capt. Mawanda clarified that there was no special arrangement between the two forces; rather, the police voluntarily joined in to support the cause.

“We are working together as one team. The police joined us willingly, and we appreciate their support in making this exercise a success,” Capt. Manda said.

He noted that the UPDF will continue engaging in other community-oriented activities such as medical outreaches, including free male circumcision and minor surgeries, across the division’s area of responsibility.

Tarehe Sita, meaning “the sixth day” in Swahili, marks the launch of the National Resistance Army (NRA) liberation struggle on February 6, 1981. This historic day is celebrated annually to honor the sacrifices of NRA fighters and recognize the UPDF’s role in securing and developing Uganda.

This year’s 44th Tarehe Sita anniversary is being commemorated under the theme of “Consolidating the People’s Revolution for Socioeconomic Transformation”, emphasizing the UPDF’s continued role in national development.

Following the cleanup, Bernard Anyeko pledged to mobilize his team to maintain the cleanliness of Lira Bus Park, urging traders and transporters to take responsibility for their surroundings.

The UPDF’s engagement in Lira City ahead of Tarehe Sita celebrations has once again demonstrated the strong bond between the army and civilians, reinforcing its reputation as a people-centered force dedicated to national service beyond security operations.
