Dokolo District, Uganda – In a chilling incident that has left the community of Awiri in shock, a woman has been arrested for attempting to murder her sister-in-law’s child by throwing infant into a pit latrine.

Sandra Awino, 32, was taken into custody by police at Awiri Police Outpost on Wednesday after a dramatic rescue effort saved the life of the young child.

According to eyewitnesses, Awino was caring for the child alongside her husband in Awiri when she allegedly threw the infant into the 60-foot pit latrine.

Police swung into action after receiving a report of the incident and retrieved the child from the pit latrine. The child was rushed to Awiri Health Centre for treatment and is currently in stable condition.

Awino has been charged with attempted murder and is being held at Awiri Police Outpost pending further investigation.

Officer in Charge Margate Abura confirmed the arrest and stated that Awino has a history of erratic behaviour, having allegedly attempted to strangle another child recently.

“We are investigating the circumstances surrounding this incident and will ensure that justice is served,” Abura said.

Health experts have been called in to assess Awino’s mental state to determine her fitness for trial.

The grandmother of the rescued child, Milly Ajwang, expressed relief and gratitude to the police for their prompt action.

“We are thankful to the police for saving our child’s life,” Ajwang said. “We demand justice for this heinous act.”

Local leader Kenneth Owiny Ogwal, LC2 Chairman of Awiri Parish, condemned the incident and called for increased vigilance in the community.

“We will not tolerate such barbaric acts in our community,” Ogwal said. “We must work together to protect our children.”

The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, with many calling for stricter punishment for Awino if found guilty.

As the investigation continues, the community remains on high alert, demanding justice for the young child and increased protection for all children in the area.
