14 Lives Lost as Lightning Strike Devastates Refugee Camp in Lamwo

Lamwo, Uganda – Tragedy struck the Palabek refugee camp in Lamwo, Uganda, as a devastating lightning strike claimed the lives of 14 South Sudanese refugees and left 34 others injured.

The victims, which included 12 children and 2 adults, were seeking shelter from the rain at a World Food Programme (WFP) food distribution center when the bolt struck on November 2.

According to local authorities, the incident occurred around 5:30 pm, and those affected were immediately rushed to Paluda Health Centre III for treatment. While 28 individuals have been discharged, six remain hospitalized, receiving care for their injuries.

The deceased were laid to rest on Sunday in a somber ceremony in Block 4, Zone A of the camp.

Among the victims were Nyamaet Thiluak, 17, Nyachot Mawichnyuon, 17, Nyakueh Gatgueng, 15, Nyagai Diew, 9, Tany Tai, 12, Nyathak Mariner, 12, Chaar Tot, 18, and Madol Wigjang, 21.

Police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke confirmed the incident and expressed condolences to the families affected by this tragedy.

This heartbreaking event serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by refugee communities and the importance of providing safe and secure environments for those displaced by conflict and unrest.

As the Palabek refugee camp mourns the loss of these 14 lives, the international community must come together to offer support and solidarity during this difficult time.
