Alebtong, Uganda | The National Resistance Movement (NRM) in Alebtong District has ushered in a new wave of leadership following internal elections held on Friday, May 23, 2024.
The process, seen as a critical reset for grassroots mobilization, culminated in the election of a youthful yet ideologically anchored district team.
Deputy Resident District Commissioner (D/RDC) Mathias Lutwama, while addressing the new officials, urged them to return to the revolutionary roots of the NRM and dedicate themselves to service delivery rather than self-benefit.
He said that their mandate was not to derive personal gain from leadership but rather to become instruments of transformation in line with the party’s founding values.
Lutwama emphasized that the leaders should ground their work in the historical foundation of the NRM, recalling its formation during the 1981 bush war and the party’s focus on people-centered governance.
He further noted that the legacy of President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni—shaped by his early revolutionary work with Fronasa and training under Samora Machel in Mozambique—should be a guiding force in their leadership practice.
He stated that this legacy, which played a key role in Uganda’s liberation and regional peace, must be preserved and advanced through disciplined leadership.
The Deputy RDC advised the new team to promote innovation in party offices by ensuring that citizens at the grassroots fully benefit from government programs, especially in agriculture and animal husbandry.
He stressed that NRM offices should function as hubs of action and transformation rather than centers of mere administration.
Lutwama called for close cooperation between the district party leaders and the Government Chief Whip, Hon. Denis Hamson Obua, describing such collaboration as vital for maintaining unity and effectively lobbying for improved service delivery across Alebtong District.
The newly elected team comprises a blend of experienced political actors and promising new leaders:
1. Ocen Robert – District Chairperson and Coordinator of the Office of the NRM National Chairman in Alebtong
2. Teddy Adongo – Vice Chairperson; recognized for national-level mobilization
3. Omara Alex – General Secretary and LCIII Chairperson of Akura Subcounty, noted for integrity
4. Dr. Samuel Oledo – District Publicity Secretary
5. Mzee Angelo Okello – Elders’ Chairperson; one of the original NRM mobilizers in the Lango sub-region
6. Atino Maureen – Chairperson, District Women’s League
7. Benjamin Harry Otengo – Youth League Chairperson; son of Ambassador Rebecca Otengo
8. Dr. Lakisa Mercy – Vice Chairperson, District Youth League
Lutwama concluded by advising the leaders to uphold discipline, loyalty, and responsiveness to community needs.
He warned them against factionalism and complacency, urging them instead to serve as engines of unity and progress.
He reminded them that, as the face of the Movement in Alebtong, their leadership should translate into visible change in the lives of ordinary citizens.
