Lira City, Uganda – In a heartfelt appeal to parents and guardians, the Awitong/Head of the Ober Clan, Mr. Geoffrey Etwop, has urged families to take an active role in guiding and supporting their children during the holiday season.

Speaking to Dokolo Post reporter on Wednesday, 4th December 2024, Etwop emphasized the critical role parents play in shaping the future of their children during this extended break from school.

“This is a long holiday. We are asking parents to control their children’s lives, ensuring they know when they go in and out. We want these children back in February next year,” he said, stressing the importance of ensuring children remain safe and disciplined.

Etwop acknowledged the efforts of teachers in disciplining students and pupils during the school term but underscored that this responsibility now shifts to parents.

He encouraged parents to take time to understand their children’s challenges, offer moral guidance, and provide meaningful activities to keep them engaged throughout the holidays.

Etwop noted that parents who actively communicate with their children are better positioned to detect signs of trouble or risky behaviour.

“It is easy for parents to discover when their children are engaging in questionable activities if they take time to talk to them,” he said.

He also called on families to instil practical knowledge and skills in their children, preparing them for life beyond academics.

The Awitong specifically urged parents to teach their daughters to take on domestic responsibilities, noting that girls should be “tough” in handling household duties.

While his comments may spark debate over traditional gender roles, they reflect his belief in the importance of preparing young people for adulthood.

Etwop’s advice comes at a time when many parents and guardians face challenges balancing work and family responsibilities.

However, his message serves as a reminder that the holiday season is an opportunity to strengthen family bonds and guide children on the path to becoming responsible and successful adults.

As the holidays stretch into the new year, Etwop’s call resonates with the broader community, highlighting the collective responsibility of parents, guardians, and society to nurture the next generation.

“Parents must take this opportunity to be close to their children, understand them, and provide the guidance they need to navigate life,” he concluded.

With his powerful message, the Awitong of Ober Clan has set the tone for a holiday season centred on family, care, and responsibility.
