Lira, Uganda – Sarah Awor Angweri, the Female Workers Councillor for Lira City, has reaffirmed her bid for the Woman Member of Parliament seat for Lira City in the 2026 elections under the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party.
Speaking at a press briefing at Gracious Place Hotel on December 29, 2024, Awor expressed gratitude to those who supported her during her recent legal challenges and made strong accusations against local authorities she claims are working to suppress her political ambitions.
“I want to thank the workers I represent at City Council for standing by me and breaking the chain of intimidation against me,” Awor began. “I am free today because of your prayers and support. May God bless you as we continue fighting for the freedom of our country and people from corrupt leaders.”
Awor and Speaker Daniel Okello of Lira City West Division were arrested on December 17 during a monitoring exercise at Adyel Children’s Park.
Accused of inciting violence, the pair was later released on bond.
In her speech, Awor directly accused Resident City Commissioner (RCC) Lawrence Egole of being part of a scheme to frustrate her.
“I want to tell RCC Egole that whatever he wants to do to me, I am not scared of him. Who is he? I can only be scared of God, not any other human being. This is our time, a generational call, and we will not allow anyone to suppress us,” she declared.
Awor also alleged that Egole, alongside other corrupt officials, had been using state institutions to silence her.
“They are thugs who have been stealing government money and are afraid of being exposed. But let me tell them: I am not afraid of any punishment. As long as I am alive, I will keep speaking out about what is wrong,” she said.

Quoting the late Nelson Mandela, Awor added, “Nelson Mandela spent 27 years in prison and came out to lead his country with dignity and grace. When he was asked what he would do to those who imprisoned him, he said, ‘I will forgive them.’ As a good leader, I also forgive those who have wronged me. But I will not be silenced.”
Reaffirming her loyalty to NRM, Awor stated, “I am still in the NRM and no one will chase me away. This party is not owned by individuals; it is a national institution. We will fight for its integrity from within.”
Quoting Psalms 118:5-7, she expressed her resilience: “What can man do to me? My God will fight for me, and I will win this battle.”
In response, RCC Lawrence Egole dismissed Awor’s accusations, emphasizing the legality of the actions taken against her.
“The matter of Sarah Awor Angweri is in court, and we should let the law take its course. Her arrest stemmed from actions during the monitoring of the Adyel Children’s Park project. She and Speaker Okello were not part of the official monitoring team and disrupted a lawful exercise,” Egole stated.
Egole denied any personal vendetta against Awor, adding, “This is not about political suppression. The law applies to everyone equally, and their actions warranted the intervention of the police. Let the court decide on the matter based on evidence.”
Awor remains resolute in her political ambitions, stating, “I will not give up, no matter the challenges. This is a fight for justice, and I am prepared to see it through to the very end.”
The clash between Awor and Egole has sparked significant public interest, with many keenly watching how this political drama will unfold in the run-up to the 2026 elections.
