Bank of Uganda Warns Lovers, Stop Using Banknotes as Valentine’s Day Gifts

Kampala, Uganda | With only days remaining to Valentine’s Day on February 14, 2026, the Bank of Uganda (BoU) has cautioned Ugandans against using the national currency as gift wraps and decorative items during celebrations, warning that the practice damages banknotes and increases the cost of printing and replacing money.

The warning was issued by the Director of Communications and Public Relations at the central bank, Kenneth Egesa, in a press statement released on February 6, 2026.

Egesa said the public should refrain from any practice that mutilates, defaces, or compromises the integrity of the Uganda Shilling, noting that damaged notes lose their usefulness and become unsuitable for use in cash processing equipment, including counting machines and automated teller machines (ATMs).

He explained that such damage leads to the premature withdrawal of banknotes from circulation, forcing the central bank to replace them at an avoidable cost that is ultimately borne by the public.

The central bank specifically targeted florists, designers, gifting stylists, and their clients, urging them to stop using banknotes and coins to make bouquets and other creative gift items.

According to the statement, the practice mainly involves sticking together brand-new notes using glue, cello tape, pins, clips, and other adhesives to form floral arrangements and decorative displays for social events and gifting ceremonies.

While the Bank of Uganda does not object to the use of cash as a gift, Egesa emphasized that such exchanges should follow the normal use of currency for facilitating payment transactions.

He added that responsible handling of money is essential to maintaining public confidence in the national currency and ensuring the smooth functioning of the country’s financial system.

BoU urged members of the public to explore alternative and innovative ways of celebrating Valentine’s Day that do not involve damaging banknotes.

The central bank reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the integrity of Uganda Shilling and called upon all stakeholders to support efforts aimed at safeguarding the country’s monetary system.
