Man Killed in Violent Clash at Traditional Wedding in Alebtong

Alebtong, Uganda | Police in Alebtong District are investigating a murder by assault following a violent altercation that broke out during a traditional wedding ceremony in Akura Sub-county on Saturday night.

The incident occurred at about 11pm on February 7, 2026, at Te-Iconga Village in Kai Parish, Akura Sub-county.

The deceased, a male adult identified only by the nickname “Bye Bye”, was a resident of Anai in Lira City West Division, according to police.

North Kyoga regional police spokesperson, SP Jimmy Patrick Okema, said the victim was among a group of revellers who reportedly travelled from Lira City to attend the ceremony hosted at the home of Amai Odero.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that the deceased and some of his colleagues, who were allegedly not invited to the function, consumed alcohol and later became involved in a violent confrontation,” SP Okema said in a statement issued on Sunday.

During the scuffle, the deceased was reportedly assaulted and struck with stones, leaving him unconscious.

Police officers who had been deployed to provide security at the ceremony intervened and found the victim lying motionless. He was later confirmed dead at the scene.

Four suspects Amure Ambrose, Ojok Oscar, Obot Andrew and Okello Solomon were arrested shortly after the incident and are currently in custody at Akura Police Station to assist with investigations.

The Officer in Charge of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) at Akura Police Station registered the case as murder at about 1am on February 8.

Detectives, together with a Scene of Crime Officer, visited and documented the scene, recorded witness statements, and recovered stones suspected to have been used in the assault as exhibits.

The body of the deceased was conveyed to Alebtong Health Centre IV mortuary pending a postmortem examination.

Police have cautioned members of the public to exercise restraint during social gatherings and to avoid attending functions uninvited, warning that such situations can easily escalate into violence.

“We condemn this unfortunate incident and assure the public that all necessary steps will be taken to ensure justice is served for the deceased,” SP Okema said.

Investigations into the matter are ongoing.
