Bishop Wanok Urges Catechists to Stay Neutral in Politics Ahead of 2026 Elections

Lira, Uganda – In a strong call for unity and focus on spiritual duties, the Bishop of the Lira Diocese, Sanctus Lino Wanok, has urged catechists to refrain from endorsing political parties or candidates as Uganda prepares for the 2026 general elections.

His message was delivered during a ceremony at the St. John Bosco Catechetical Pastoral Centre in Ngetta, where he commissioned 37 catechists who had completed their three-year training.

Bishop Wanok stressed that catechists should remain steadfast in their pastoral responsibilities, avoiding any political involvement for personal gain.

He reminded the congregation that while God’s servants do not receive a regular salary, it is the Christian community’s duty to offer support and respect for those serving in these vital roles.

“Let us focus on building our communities in Christ, rather than engaging in politics. Our strength comes from God, and our mission is to serve the people, not seek political advantage,” Bishop Wanok said.

The bishop’s remarks come at a time when political tensions are rising ahead of the 2026 elections, with many fearing the divisive nature of political affiliations.

Fr. John Valero, Director of the Catechetical Pastoral Centre, commended the tutors and staff for their dedication, despite challenges such as financial constraints, health issues and poverty.

He highlighted the difficulties faced by the catechists, noting that out of 95 candidates interviewed for the 2022-2024 intake, only 50 were able to enroll.

Mr. George Judith Ewet, representing the CPC tutors, encouraged the catechists to apply their newfound knowledge and to work together as a team, while avoiding competition and unethical behavior in their service.

Catechist representative, Mr. Jaspher Sarah Ogwang, called on the community for both spiritual and financial support as they spread messages of peace and unity.

Fellow catechist Anthony Oliver Ogwal added that the three-year study had deepened their understanding of the Church’s doctrines, urging others to continue their education.

The 37 commissioned catechists were blessed and presented with bicycles, catechist books, and metal boxes for their materials, as they embark on their mission to serve Christ and their communities.
