Soroti, Uganda – Hon. Richard Sebamala, the Bukoto Central Member of Parliament, has taken a bold step to steer the Democratic Party (DP) toward a new direction by leading the suspension of the cooperation agreement.
He argued that the agreement had compromised the party’s independence, silenced its voice and weakened its ability to act as a credible opposition.
This decision was unanimously endorsed during the DP National Delegates Conference, marking a turning point in the party’s history.
Sebamala has consistently expressed concern that the cooperation agreement reduced the Democratic Party to a subordinate role, undermining its core values of democracy, justice and transparency.
At the conference, he emphasized that the party’s loyalty should be to the people, not to external forces. According to Sebamala, the agreement had only served the interests of a select few while alienating the party’s grassroots supporters and limiting its ability to challenge government policies.
Despite Norbert Mao’s plea for a one-month delay to explain and defend the agreement, Sebamala and the majority of delegates remained firm.
They argued that the party could no longer afford to operate under an agreement that had weakened its position and threatened its future.
There was a clear consensus that the cooperation agreement had undermined the party’s influence and diminished its ability to represent the interests of Ugandans effectively.
Under Sebamala’s leadership, the Democratic Party is now focused on rebuilding, reorganizing and reclaiming its position as a strong, independent political force.
His vision is to restore the party’s integrity by empowering grassroots structures and re-engaging with the people.
He is calling on all DP members and supporters to unite behind this new direction and resist any attempts to dilute the party’s mission.
The suspension of the cooperation agreement signals the beginning of a new era for the Democratic Party-one defined by independence and a renewed commitment to democratic change.
Sebamala and other progressive leaders are determined to restore the party’s legacy and ensure it remains a vocal advocate for the people’s interests.
