Lira City, Uganda – The Chief Magistrate Court of Lira has adjourned the hearing of Sarah Awor Angweri, Lira City Female Workers Councillor and Daniel Okello, Speaker of Lira City West Division, to February 6, 2025.
The duo was arrested by Lira City West Division police on December 17, 2024, at Adyel Children’s Park.
Their arrest followed allegations of inciting violence during a monitoring visit by Lira City Council officials, including Mayor Sam Atul and RCC Lawrence Egole.
During today’s session before Chief Magistrate Joe Adoko Fay, the proceedings were postponed due to Okello’s ill health.
Awor revealed that her co-accused is still unwell and in need of prayers as he battles health challenges.
Speaking to journalists at Space Lounge in Lira City, Awor expressed frustration over their arrest, describing it as baseless and politically motivated.
She asserted that their actions were part of their duties as elected leaders overseeing development projects in their constituencies.
“We were arrested for no valid reason, yet it is our responsibility to oversee key projects in our areas,” Awor said, attributing their ordeal to resistance against their anti-corruption efforts.
Awor appealed to the people of Lango to pray for Okello’s recovery and to support their continued efforts to combat corruption and advocate for the rights of Lira City residents.
She revealed that threats against her life have forced her into hiding but vowed to remain steadfast in her mission.
“Whether it’s a do-or-die situation, we will not give up. We are committed to fighting corruption and standing for the rights of the people,” she affirmed.
The adjournment has granted additional time for the parties involved to prepare for the next court hearing, as the case continues to attract significant public interest in Lira City.
