Cyclist Killed in Road Crash at Jinja Camp Construction Site

Lira, Uganda | Police in Lira City West Division are investigating a fatal road traffic crash in which a 28-year-old cyclist was killed at a road construction site in Jinja Camp on Tuesday morning.

The crash occurred at about 9am on February 4, 2026, along the Kamdini–Lira City road, involving a grey Sino truck, registration number UBP 495L / TUA 293AA, and a pedal cyclist identified as Awio Daniel, a painter and resident of Amuca Cells in Lira City West Division.

According to police, both the truck and the cyclist were travelling in the same direction from Kamdini towards Lira City when they reached the construction section of the road, where traffic was being controlled by a flagman.

Vehicles heading towards Kamdini were reportedly allowed to pass first as those heading into the city waited.

Police say that shortly after motorists heading towards Lira City were signalled to proceed, some drivers allegedly began overtaking recklessly.

In the process, an unidentified motorcycle is said to have knocked the cyclist, causing him to fall beneath the moving truck. The rear tyres of the trailer reportedly ran over him.

Awio was rushed to Charis Health Facility at Jinja Camp for emergency treatment but was later pronounced dead.

The scene was visited and documented by traffic officers led by PC Komakech Kagwa, assisted by PC Ayoo Oscar.

Both the truck and the bicycle were towed and are currently parked at Lira City West Division, pending inspection by the Inspector of Vehicles.

Police say investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash are ongoing, including efforts to trace the motorcycle allegedly involved.

Commenting on the incident, the North Kyoga Regional Police spokesperson, SP Jimmy Patrick Okema, described the crash as unfortunate and urged motorists to exercise caution, especially around road construction sites.

“We appeal to all road users to respect traffic rules and avoid reckless overtaking to prevent such tragic loss of life,” SP Okema said.
