Lira, Uganda | Youth in Lira City East Division are set to celebrate International Youth Day on Friday, August 14, 2026, with a range of activities aimed at promoting health, skills development, talent and economic empowerment. The celebrations will be held at Railways Seed Secondary School playground, starting at 9:00am.

Lira City East Division Youth Councillor Epila Moses, who is also the chairperson of the organising committee, said the celebration is important because it would give young people an opportunity to learn, interact and discover opportunities that could improve their lives. He called on youth to turn up in large numbers and participate in the activities.

Epila said the programme would feature health screenings, exhibitions of different skills, and other activities targeting young people. He added that security authorities had been informed about the event, and preparations are in place to ensure the celebration takes place peacefully.

Lira City East Division Youth Chairperson Dickens Olule thanked individuals and organisations that had contributed towards making the celebration possible. He appealed to other well-wishers to support the event, saying the door is still open to anyone willing to contribute while encouraging youth to attend and celebrate together.

Youth leader Okello Joshua Jonathan said activities would begin at 9:00am and include football, stage performances, and traditional dances. He added that business consultants would be available to guide young people on enterprise development and other avenues for economic growth.

Uganda marked International Youth Day on August 12, 2026.

With more than 73% of Uganda’s population below the age of 30, the government has highlighted programmes such as the Parish Development Model and technology-driven job opportunities as key strategies for youth empowerment. The Lira City East celebration is expected to complement these efforts by bringing young people together to access health services, showcase their talents, and explore opportunities for personal and economic development.
