Lira, Uganda | Police in the North Kyoga Region are investigating a fatal road accident in Lira City West Division in which an unidentified female cyclist was knocked dead by a speeding trailer along Juba Road on Monday morning.
The incident occurred at around 7:30 am near Good Lord Hardware. According to police, both the trailer, registration number KBS 761N/ZD 8362, a white Mercedes-Benz fuel tanker, and the cyclist were traveling from Kamdini towards Lira City when the collision happened.
Preliminary reports indicate that the trailer driver attempted to overtake the cyclist but miscalculated, hitting her and inflicting severe head injuries that led to her death on the spot.
Police say the driver, whose identity has not yet been released, later reported himself and the vehicle to Lira Central Division Police Station, where the tanker is now parked pending inspection by the Inspector of Vehicles (IOV).
Traffic officers from Lira City West Division visited the scene, and the body of the deceased was taken to Lira Regional Referral Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination.
Preliminary findings point to reckless driving as the cause of the accident.
North Kyoga Regional Police spokesperson SP Jimmy Patrick Okema confirmed the incident and said investigations are ongoing.
