Lira University Student, Local Referee Commits Suicide in Lira City West Division

Lira, Uganda | Police in Lira City West Division are investigating a case of suicide involving a Lira University student and local football referee who was found dead by hanging early Monday morning in Ober Kampala Cell.

The deceased, identified as Okello Boniface, was discovered at around 7:00 am after a report was made to police by Omara Tony, a 30-year-old medical worker and resident of the same area.

According to preliminary police findings, Boniface’s body was found hanging from a tree approximately three metres from his home.

His legs were suspended about three metres above the ground, the head tilted to the left with a V-shaped mark on the neck, and his tongue protruding.

Police also noted bruising on the left cheek, a pair of sandals placed beneath the tree, and signs consistent with death by hanging.

At the time, the deceased was wearing a blue trouser with a brown belt and a green striped T-shirt. The body was described as well-nourished.

Officers from the Lira City West Division, led by the DPC and OC CID, visited and documented the scene.

Statements were taken from witnesses, and the body was transported to Lira Regional Referral Hospital for a postmortem examination.

North Kyoga Regional Police spokesperson SP Jimmy Patrick Okema described the incident as unfortunate, urging members of the public to speak out when faced with challenges and to seek help from friends, family, religious, and cultural leaders.

Police have not yet established the circumstances that may have led to the suicide, but investigations are ongoing.
