Dr. Mercy Lakisa Shakes Up Alebtong WMP Race, Giving Incumbent Dorcus Acen a Tough Battle as 7 Candidates Enter the 2026 Contest

Alebtong, Uganda – Alebtong District is on the brink of a political revolution as Dr. Mercy Lakisa shakes up the Women Member of Parliament (WMP) race ahead of the 2026 elections.

With overwhelming grassroots support across all seven sub-counties, her bid is swiftly turning into a people-driven movement demanding new leadership and transformative change.

Denis from Apala lamented years of stagnation and ineffective representation, recalling that former WMP Rebecca Amuge Otengo set a high standard that her successors have failed to uphold.

“This time, we will not be deceived. Dr. Mercy Lakisa has our support because she stands for real change,” he declared.

Achol from Aloi was more direct, stating that the incumbent, Dorcus Acen, has failed to deliver on key promises and will not return to parliament.

Meanwhile, Jack Bill Okello pointed out that the battle within the NRM is intensifying, with Lakisa and Janet Akello emerging as the strongest contenders.

“Once the NRM primaries determine a winner, it will be an easy path to victory in the general election,” he observed.

Dr. Lakisa’s growing influence has not gone unnoticed by political analysts, who see her as a unifying figure with broad appeal.

While her support is strongest among the youth and women, even traditional elders in Omoro have endorsed her leadership qualities.

In Amugu, where Christine Acen Ayo still commands loyalty, Lakisa is steadily gaining ground with her message of development and inclusive governance.

Determined and confident, Dr. Mercy Lakisa confirmed her candidacy under the NRM banner, stating that her decision followed extensive consultations.

“The people of Alebtong are yearning for visionary leadership. I am here to be their voice, to champion policies that will uplift livelihoods, and to ensure no one is left behind,” she affirmed.

She emphasized her commitment to a peaceful, policy-driven campaign that focuses on progress rather than division.

The incumbent, Dorcus Acen, remains cautious, stating that she will unveil her reelection plans once the NRM Electoral Commission releases the official campaign roadmap.

She has promised to highlight her achievements over the past five years as part of her strategy to retain the seat.

In the last election 2021 WMP election recap, Acen Dorcus (NRM) won with 29,184 votes, while Acen Christine Ayo (Independent) came second with 17,269 votes. Other candidates included Abongo O. Elizabeth (FDC) with 11,672 votes, Atim Judith Joy (UPC) with 6,346 votes, Alum Catherine Jogole (Independent) with 1,582 votes, and Akullu Emily Omacara (Independent) with 1,040 votes.
