Soroti, Uganda | Learners of Tubur Primary School in Soroti District are set to benefit from improved sanitation and access to clean water following a commitment by Soroti City West Member of Parliament and Minister of State for Foreign Affairs-designate, Calvin Echodu, to address critical infrastructure challenges at the institution.
Echodu made the pledge on Saturday during celebrations held in honor of Bob Owiny following his election as LC5 chairperson of Soroti District. The event attracted local leaders, education stakeholders, cultural leaders, parents and community members.
Responding to concerns raised by residents about the school’s deteriorating facilities, Echodu pledged to construct a boys’ toilet block and restore the school’s water supply system, which has remained non-functional for years.
He said improving learning conditions for children remains a priority, noting that access to safe water and adequate sanitation facilities is essential for promoting learners’ health, dignity and academic performance.
The announcement was welcomed by parents and community members, who described the intervention as timely and necessary.
Elubu James, a parent with a child at the school, said the lack of water has been a major challenge affecting learners on a daily basis.
“Water is essential for hygiene and learning. Our children have endured these challenges for a long time. We are grateful for Hon. Echodu’s commitment to restore the water system and improve sanitation facilities at the school,” he said.
Community elder Apio Martha praised Echodu for what she described as his long-standing commitment to supporting communities across the Teso sub-region.
“I have witnessed his support to vulnerable people and community initiatives even before he became a Member of Parliament. His commitment to Tubur Primary School gives us confidence that more development projects will reach our communities,” she said.
Education stakeholders noted that inadequate sanitation facilities and unreliable access to water have continued to affect many rural schools, undermining efforts to create safe and conducive learning environments.
They expressed optimism that the planned projects will improve hygiene standards, reduce health risks and enhance the overall welfare of learners and staff.
Once implemented, the construction of the boys’ toilet block and restoration of the water supply system are expected to significantly improve conditions at the school and contribute to its long-term development.
