Health Worker Among Four Arrested Over UGX 14M Drug Theft in Alebtong

Alebtong, UgandaPolice in Alebtong District are holding four suspects, including a health worker, in connection with the theft of drugs and equipment worth over UGX 14 million from Alebtong Health Centre IV.

The incident, which has raised concerns about security lapses in public health facilities, occurred on the night of November 15, 2024.

The suspects are Isaac Oroma, a resident of Apado Cell; Pius Deo Ongel, a health worker at the health centre; Bonny Otim; and Bwomyo Pius, both residents of Alebtong Town Council.

According to North Kioga Region Police Spokesperson Patrick Jimmy Okema, the theft was discovered on the morning of November 16, 2024.

A health worker had locked the store the previous evening at around 6:30 PM, but by morning, the store had been broken into.

Among the items stolen were computers, gloves, and critical medical supplies such as antimalarial drugs for both adults and children.

Health centre authorities reported the matter immediately, prompting a swift response from the police. A police dog was deployed to the scene and successfully tracked evidence leading to the suspects’ arrest.

“We are confident that we are making headway in this investigation. While the suspects are in custody, we will review CCTV footage from the health centre to confirm their involvement,” Okema said during a press briefing at Lira Central Police Station.

The involvement of a health worker in the crime has drawn widespread condemnation, with residents expressing outrage over the betrayal of trust.

“This is deeply troubling. Health workers are entrusted with safeguarding our well-being, and to hear of their alleged involvement in such a crime is shocking,” one resident lamented.

The theft comes at a time when public health facilities are already grappling with limited resources, further compounding the challenges faced by the community in accessing quality healthcare.

Okema assured the public that the suspects would face the full extent of the law if found guilty.

He also emphasized the importance of bolstering security in public facilities to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Community leaders have called for stricter monitoring and accountability measures, including regular audits of medical supplies and improved surveillance systems.

This incident highlights the urgent need for reform in the management and security of public health facilities. Beyond addressing this specific case, stakeholders must work to rebuild public confidence in the healthcare system.

As investigations continue, residents remain hopeful that the stolen items will be recovered and that those responsible will be held accountable. For now, the focus shifts to addressing the systemic gaps that made such a theft possible.
