Kampala, Uganda | Security agencies under the Uganda Police Force have intensified operations across the Kampala Metropolitan area, arresting more than 100 suspects in a coordinated crackdown targeting criminal hideouts, illegal activities, and emerging security threats.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Public Relations Office Luke Owoyesigyire, the intelligence-led operations focused on high-risk zones, including Kira Road, Ntinda, Nateete, Entebbe, and Kasangati divisions.
In the Kira Road policing area, particularly Mulimira and Kyebando, a joint operation led by the Divisional Police Commander resulted in the arrest of 31 suspects. The individuals are currently detained at Kira Road Police Division, undergoing screening and fingerprinting as investigations continue.
In Ntinda’s Kigowa area, police patrol teams intercepted a group of suspected criminals who fled upon detection, abandoning an assortment of weapons and tools commonly associated with violent crime and housebreaking. These included pangas, iron bars, hammers, and containers of suspected fuel. Two suspects were later apprehended while hiding in a residential garage. Preliminary investigations suggest the group may have been planning arson attacks linked to an ongoing land dispute.
Meanwhile, in Nateete’s Kanaala Zone, one suspect was arrested in possession of four motorcycles suspected to have been stolen, along with multiple number plates. Authorities are currently verifying ownership details with relevant agencies.
Operations in Entebbe, specifically in Bunono and Guda, led to the arrest of 31 suspects linked to theft, burglary, and vandalism. Police confirmed that the suspects have since been formally charged and are awaiting court proceedings.
In Kasangati Division, covering Wampewo Ward, Gayaza, and Kijabijjo, more than 47 suspects were apprehended during targeted operations on betting centres and known criminal hideouts. Two additional suspects were arrested for operating an illegal garage in Kijabijjo, allegedly used to dismantle stolen motorcycles. Several dismantled parts and number plates were recovered as exhibits.
Police have raised concern over the increasing use of betting centres, unfinished buildings, and temporary structures as safe havens for criminal elements. Authorities say ongoing operations are being adjusted to address these evolving tactics.
“All suspects remain in custody pending screening and subsequent court action where applicable,” Owoyesigyire stated, adding that the operations mark a significant step in disrupting organised criminal networks within the city.
The Kampala Metropolitan Police have pledged to sustain the momentum, emphasizing their commitment to restoring public safety and eliminating criminal activity across the city.
