Kyambogo University Students Vow to Continue Protests Over Unresolved Grievances

Kampala, Uganda – Tension is rising at Kyambogo University following a peaceful protest organized by the students’ guild over what they termed as long-standing, unresolved grievances.

The protest, held on Tuesday, 23rd April, drew scores of students who demonstrated in a calm and orderly manner to demand action from university management.

In an official communication signed by the 21st Guild President, Akiso Benjamin, the students expressed frustration with what they described as the authorities’ failure to address key concerns, including a controversial surcharge, a 70% tuition clearance requirement to sit for examinations and persistent delays in the release of marks.

The guild leadership commended the peaceful nature of the protest, stating that it sent a strong signal about the urgency of student demands.

They also reaffirmed the right to peaceful assembly and petition as enshrined in the Uganda Constitution.

Despite the orderly conduct of the demonstration, the letter conveyed disappointment over the lack of timely and concrete response from both the university management and the University Council.

The students have issued a clear ultimatum: if their concerns remain unaddressed by 8:00 PM on the same day, they will suspend attending lectures and continue with non-violent protests.

Guild President Akiso emphasized the students’ determination to have their voices heard, urging university authorities to take their demands seriously to prevent further disruption.

He called for unity among students and reiterated the guild’s commitment to peaceful engagement.

The university administration is yet to issue a formal response.
