Lira City East Mayor Honored for Fighting Corruption

Lira, Uganda – George Okello Ayo, the Mayor of Lira City East Division, has received a certificate from Action Aid Uganda recognizing his efforts in combating corruption in Lira City.

The award celebrates his achievements in reducing corruption within the Lira City Council and East Division, achieved through collaboration with his councilors. 

Speaking at the ceremony, Mayor Okello Ayo highlighted his administration’s accomplishments and called for collective action.

“We have significantly reduced corruption levels in Lira City Council and East Division. However, corruption remains rampant in Uganda, affecting the growth and development of our nation,” he said. 

Mayor Okello Ayo urged residents of Lira City and the broader Lango sub-region to support anti-corruption initiatives.

He has called on the Uganda Police to intensify investigations and hold government officials accountable.

“The police must continue their work to ensure that those involved in corruption face justice,” he added. 

This is the third significant award for Mayor Okello Ayo.

Previously, he earned a degree from Gulu University and received a Catholic certificate recognizing his contributions to the community.

The ActionAid certificate affirms his dedication to fostering transparency and accountability in governance. 
 
Mayor Okello’s leadership highlights the importance of integrity in public office.

His appeal to local residents, civil society and law enforcement underscores the need for a united front to combat corruption, which he described as one of Uganda’s biggest challenges. 

The mayor’s efforts serve as a beacon of hope, inspiring others to join the fight for a more transparent and accountable Uganda.
