Lira, Uganda | Police in Lira City are investigating two separate incidents involving the sudden death of an adult male and the recovery of the body of an abandoned infant.

According to the North Kyoga Regional Police spokesperson, Mr PJ Okema, the first incident was reported in the early hours of March 20, 2026.

A 48-year-old man, identified as Akena Faruk, alerted police at Lira City Central Police Station about the death of Onyango Festo, 50.

The deceased was found lying lifeless at a garage in Bazza West Cell, Bazza Ward, in Lira City West Division.

Preliminary findings indicate that Onyango had been living alone in the city without a fixed place of residence.

At the scene, police reportedly recovered two tins of antiretroviral (ARV) drugs and a personal medical record book bearing his name.

Police suspect that the deceased may have been in poor nutritional condition while on medication, possibly compounded by excessive alcohol consumption, factors that could have contributed to his death.

The body was taken to Lira City Mortuary for a postmortem examination to establish the exact cause of death.

In a separate incident, police recovered the body of a young female infant that had been dumped in Okole Swamp along the Lira–Kitgum Road in Ayago Cell, Ayago Ward, Lira City East Division.

Officers responded to reports from members of the public, retrieved the body, and conveyed it to Lira City Mortuary for further examination.

Police have called on local leaders and residents to support ongoing efforts to identify and apprehend the person responsible for abandoning the infant. Investigations into both incidents are ongoing.
