Lira, Uganda | Excitement turned to alarm yesterday at Uganda Technical College (UTC) Lira during the FUFA Drum quarter-final match between Lango Province and Teso Province, when part of an old classroom structure collapsed, injuring several spectators.
The match attracted fans from Lango, Acholi, and Teso regions, with an estimated crowd of over 30,000. Spectators had paid an entry fee of UGX 5,000 and were verified at designated checkpoints.
However, the large turnout overwhelmed officials at the ticketing points, and some fans climbed onto rooftops and nearby trees to get a better view of the game.
According to SP Patrick Jimmy Okema, Public Relations Officer for North Kyoga Police, the incident occurred at approximately the 79th minute of the second half, shortly after Lango Province scored a goal.
Police officers deployed at the venue responded swiftly, coordinating the evacuation of the injured.
Victims were rushed by city ambulance to Lira Regional Referral Hospital for treatment, suffering injuries that included fractures to arms and legs as well as dental injuries.
The injured individuals include:
- Ouni Emmanuel, 23, Lira City
- Okello Dan, 22, Lira City East Division
- Ogwal Sam, 24, Lira City
- Emitu Michael, 25, Soroti District
- Ayaka Eliza, 27, Soroti District
- Elotu John, 30, Soroti District
Two additional victims were referred to Gulu
Regional Referral Hospital for further management. Hospital Director Dr. Andrew Odur confirmed that two of the victims are stable and responding well to treatment, while the third, a 28-year-old man who sustained a head injury, underwent a CT scan and was referred to St. Mary’s Hospital Lacor for specialized care.
All three were confirmed as supporters of Teso Province, and no fatalities have been reported.
A case of accident by collapsed building has been registered at Lira City East Police Division, and investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident are ongoing.
SP Okema urged the public to exercise caution at crowded events and avoid climbing on unsafe structures.
The Lango Province Communication Office commended the prompt action of the emergency response teams, which prevented more serious outcomes, and extended wishes for a full recovery to all injured.
The incident has reignited calls for enhanced stadium safety measures and crowd management, highlighting the importance of preparedness to ensure fan safety during large sporting events.
