Lira, Uganda — Lira Diocese is set to make history on November 22nd with its first-ever celebration of St. Cecilia, the patron saint of music.
The event, taking place at St. Mary Magdalene SS Ground in Lira, will bring together local musicians, community members and artists for a day of music, prayer and fundraising.
Rev. Fr. Deogratias Odwee, parish priest of Teboke Catholic Parish and chaplain to the diocesan choir, expressed his excitement, saying, “This is the first time we’re celebrating St. Cecilia in such a grand way. Music is central to our faith and this event will showcase the talents of our choir members.”
The celebration will feature musical performances that blend traditional hymns and contemporary liturgical songs, highlighting Lira’s rich musical culture.

In addition, a fundraising initiative will support the choirs across the diocese, helping them remain independent and sustainable.
Sam Otiti, vice-chairperson of the Diocesan choir, stressed the importance of local support.
“The funds will help maintain our musical programs and empower choirs to continue contributing to the community’s spiritual and cultural life,” he said.
Denis Okullu, chairperson of the choir, revealed that new music is being recorded for the event.
“This celebration will highlight the growth and talent within our choirs, and we’re excited to debut our new pieces,” he added.
The inaugural St. Cecilia celebration promises to be a memorable occasion for Lira Diocese, one that will likely become an annual tradition, blending faith, music and community spirit for years to come.
