Lira, Uganda | Lira District has appointed a female vice chairperson for the first time in two decades following the constitution of a new district executive committee.
During a district council sitting held on Wednesday, LCV Chairperson RCM Okello Orik appointed Jane Achola, the female councilor representing Barr Sub-county, as the district vice chairperson.
The new executive committee also includes Isaac Newton Bua, the male youth councilor, who was appointed Secretary for Finance and Administration; Bonny Omara, councilor for Agweng Sub-county, named Secretary for Works and Technical Services; and Joyce Amule, the female councilor for Aromo Sub-county, appointed Secretary for Community-Based Services.
Speaking shortly after the appointments, Okello Orik called on councilors to promote unity and teamwork for effective service delivery. He said the appointments were made on the basis of fairness and inclusiveness, noting that both Erute North and Erute South had been considered in the composition of the executive committee.
The district chairperson also urged the newly appointed leaders to remain committed to their duties and seek guidance whenever necessary, warning that non-performing executive members would be dropped.
Meanwhile, Speaker of the District Council Moses Otim expressed confidence in the capability of the current council, saying many councilors possess professional experience that could help improve service delivery across the district.
Some of the newly appointed executives pledged to work closely with fellow councilors and residents to ensure effective service delivery.
Achola becomes the first woman to serve as vice chairperson of Lira District since Rebecca Otengo of Adekokwok Sub-county, who held the position between 2002 and 2006.
