Lira, Uganda – On November 26, 2024, thousands gathered at the ancestral home of Beatrice Apolo Sylvia in Amach Sub-County, Lira District, to bid farewell to a beloved daughter, mother, sister, and community leader.

Beatrice, who passed away on November 18, at the age of 51, left behind a powerful legacy of service, resilience, and dedication to her family and community.
Beatrice’s journey was one marked by hard work and determination. Born on December 1, 1973, to David and Margaret Tema, Beatrice was the third-born in a family of strong values.
Her education took her from Adyel and Amach Primary Schools to Amach Complex Senior Secondary School for her O’Level and Aduku Senior Secondary School for A’Level.

She later pursued a Diploma in Business Studies at Uganda College of Commerce (UCC), Aduku, before earning a Bachelor’s degree in Business Studies from the Islamic University of Uganda. Beatrice’s academic journey was topped with a post-graduate qualification from the Uganda Management Institute (UMI).
Her professional career began at Rhino FM, where she worked as a cashier. She later moved on to DFCU Bank, where she rose through the ranks, eventually becoming the Personal Finance Consultant. Her role as an Internal Auditor at Alebtong District Local Government was where she spent her final years, upholding the values of integrity and dedication in her work.
However, in recent years, Beatrice faced a series of health challenges. Diagnosed with hypertension and kidney disease, her health deteriorated despite several treatments, including a three-week dialysis stint in 2024.
Her family had even found a suitable kidney donor for a transplant, but sadly, Beatrice passed away before the procedure could be completed.

Her brother, Joel Okao Tema, expressed heartfelt gratitude for the unwavering support provided by Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng and the medical staff at Kiruddu Referral Hospital, who made it easier for the family to access critical care.
FDC Party President Patrick Oboi Amuriat, who had strong ties with the Tema family, extended his condolences and praised Beatrice for her tireless work in various sectors. Amuriat expressed his admiration for her resilience despite the health battles she faced.
Amuriat also touched on the ongoing struggles of the Lango region, noting that poverty was deeply entrenched in many parts of Uganda, with the northern and eastern regions particularly affected.

He stated, “If I had become the president, I would have prioritized giving grants, not loans, to help the people of Lango.”
Amuriat also commented on the political and cultural issues that have surfaced in Lango, criticizing the violence that has plagued the region’s cultural practices.
“The current cultural conflicts in Lango are a shame and an embarrassment,” he said. He urged for peace and unity, calling for the people to focus on resolving disputes without resorting to violence.
Amuriat also recalled how he came to Amach during the 2021 general elections without shoes and claims that the PoliceUg had taken them.
During the funeral, Presidential Advisor Okello Opio took to the podium to speak not only about the late Beatrice but also about the state of affairs in Northern Uganda.
Okello acknowledged the sorrow of the Tema family, particularly the loss of a woman who had contributed greatly to her community. He also spoke about the regional economic challenges, referring to the widespread poverty in Northern Uganda, especially in Lango by FDC’s Party President Patrick Oboi Amuriat to be a false claim, sighting this might only be true in Teso Subregion.
He also requested Oboi Amuriat to avail him of his shoe size so that he buys for him a new one since he has accused the police to have taken his shoes during the 2021 presidential campaign.

Bishop Emeritus John Charles Odur Kami, a key figure in the Lango community, called for unity and reconciliation within Lango, emphasizing that the region’s future depended on resolving its internal conflicts.

As the Tema family and the people of Lira laid Beatrice Apolo Sylvia to rest, her contributions to her family, community, and the nation were celebrated. Her life was marked by a commitment to service, education, and hard work. Her passing leaves a deep void, but her legacy of strength and love continues to inspire those who knew her.
