Soroti, Uganda – In a passionate address at the Ateker Reunion Festival, His Highness Paul Sande Emolot, the Emorimor of the Iteso Cultural Union, called for the creation of an Ateker Elders Council to mediate conflicts and strengthen unity among Ateker-speaking tribes.
The festival, held at Soroti Sports Ground, celebrates the shared heritage of communities across Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia and South Sudan.
Highlighting recurring disputes over grazing land and water resources, Emorimor urged leaders to embrace dialogue and collaboration, stating, “We need an Ateker Elders Council to resolve conflicts and foster unity.”
The proposed council would represent all Ateker tribes, serving as a platform for peaceful resolution of disputes and promotion of harmony.
Emorimor also emphasized the importance of involving the youth through a dedicated Ateker Youth Council, ensuring future generations are engaged in peace-building efforts.
Beyond conflict resolution, Emorimor encouraged communities to adapt to modern challenges by embracing irrigation and exploring alternative livelihoods such as agro-business, trade and eco-tourism.
“While cattle remain central to our way of life, diversification is key to building resilience and improving livelihoods,” he noted.
The Ateker Reunion Festival continues to serve as a powerful reminder of the importance of unity in diversity.
Emorimor’s proposals reflect a growing recognition that lasting peace and prosperity require both innovation and collective action.
The call for an Elders Council marks a significant step toward resolving disputes and ensuring a harmonious future for the Ateker-speaking communities.
