Oyam, Uganda – Loro Sub-County is in mourning following the sudden death of Awal Tom Walter, the NRM party chairperson for the sub-county and LC II of Opelere Parish.
Awal passed away on Wednesday, December 4, 2024, at the age of 54, after battling illness.
He was laid to rest on Thursday, December 12, 2024, in Omolo Village, Opelere Parish, where hundreds gathered to pay their respects.
Awal was a respected leader known for his commitment to unity and service, not only as an NRM chairperson but also as a key community figure who bridged political divides.
His death has left a profound void in the hearts of his family, political allies and the broader community. He leaves behind a wife and six children.
At the funeral, Fr. Peter Panya, the parish priest of Aber Catholic Parish, urged all community members, institutions and political groups to offer support to Awal’s family.
“You have lost a father and a leader who carried great responsibility for his community. We must now step in to help his family,” he said.
Hon. Benson Walter Dila Oyuku, LC V Chairperson of Oyam District, expressed the district’s commitment to supporting Awal’s family, including offering a special opportunity to one of his female orphans, who is pursuing a diploma in education at Muni University.
Patrick Ogwang Obura, a member of the NRM secretariat, thanked all those who supported Awal during his illness, particularly in the last days at Mulago National Hospital.
“Awal’s legacy of service will live on through all who loved him,” Ogwang Obura said.
Hon. Normy Otyeno, District Councilor for Kamdini and Oyam District Speaker, also emphasized the importance of unity and cooperation among political leaders.
“We must work together for the betterment of our communities,” she urged, highlighting Awal’s example of leadership that transcended political differences.
Awal’s passing marks a significant loss for both Loro Sub-County and Oyam District.
His legacy as a dedicated leader will continue to inspire all who knew him.
