Lira, Uganda | Police in Lira City have arrested a 25-year-old man for unlawful possession of government stores after he was found dressed in a full Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) combat uniform.
The suspect, identified as Omara Bruno, was intercepted at around 11:00 PM on Sunday, August 4, along Juba Road, near Jinja Camp Cell in Barogole Ward, Lira City West Division.
He was later transferred to Lira Army Barracks before being handed over to Lira City Central Division Police.
Omara, who works as a blocker at a local store, told police he received the uniform from a friend, Otim Thomas, who had asked him to escort him to Angwetangwet to pick up his girlfriend.
Omara claimed he had declined due to having no clean clothes, but Otim persuaded him to go to his home, where he gave him a UPDF shirt and trousers.
Despite initial hesitation, Omara said he eventually agreed to wear the uniform after Otim also dressed in another set, adding a military jacket on top.
The two reportedly walked along Juba Road before boarding a boda boda to continue their journey.
However, a speeding vehicle intercepted them.
Two unidentified men, one armed with an AK-47, emerged from the vehicle.
Upon seeing them, Otim fled on foot while the boda boda rider sped off, leaving Omara behind. He was arrested on the spot.
Police say preliminary information suggests Otim’s parents are UPDF soldiers attached to Bombo Military Barracks, although verification is ongoing.
Investigators believe this may not have been the first time the suspects wore army uniforms to carry out illegal activities.
The North Kyoga region has received several reports of robbery incidents involving individuals dressed in military attire, and this arrest may provide crucial leads.
Efforts to trace and apprehend Otim Thomas are underway.
Police are also investigating the possible involvement of his parents, especially if it is confirmed they are active UPDF personnel.
SP Jimmy Patrick Okema, the North Kyoga Police PRO warn that wearing or being in possession of military attire without authorisation is a serious offense and will be prosecuted accordingly.
