Lira City, Uganda – The Minister for Gender, Labour, and Social Development, Hon. Betty Amongi Akena, has on Saturday March 1, 2025, initiated a series of transformative projects in Lira City, focusing on infrastructure development, economic empowerment, and youth vocational skilling center.

One of the most notable initiatives is the rehabilitation of the Akwia Woro road, which connects Omito Ward to Anyomorem in Ngetta.
This road has been a longstanding challenge for residents, particularly during the rainy season when it becomes impassable.
Speaking at the launch of the road rehabilitation, Minister Amongi highlighted the critical role the road plays in easing transportation and economic activities in the area.
“People have been moving long distances just to find a better road to access the city centre. As a leader, it is my responsibility to ensure that my people do not suffer,” Amongi stated.
The rehabilitation work, which started earlier than planned, involves swamp raising, culvert installation, grading, and marram application. The road will be widened to 8 meters, with metallic culverts being installed to ensure durability.

According to Morish Okello, the engineer overseeing the project, 15 culvert lines will be put in place, significantly improving drainage and resilience against harsh weather conditions.
Denis Peter Odongo Otul, the Councillor for Lira City East ‘B’ and coordinator for Amongi in Lira City, revealed that the project is expected to be completed within 2 to 3 months at an estimated cost of UGX 850 million.
“It was not easy for us as a council to generate local revenue for this road. We are grateful to Minister Amongi for stepping in to support the community. She has shown commitment by not only talking but delivering real solutions,” Odongo remarked.
The road rehabilitation has sparked celebrations across Omito and Anyomorem. Residents, including children, youth, women, and elders, gathered in large numbers to show their appreciation. Many have even nicknamed the road “Amongi Betty” in recognition of her efforts.
Atoo Dorish Oyuku, the Female Councillor for Omito Ward, praised the minister’s work and urged her to continue delivering for the people of Lira City.
Other leaders, including Lira City West Division Speaker Daniel Okello and Councillor Mike Ogwal, also commended the minister.
Ogwal noted that the swamp rehabilitation alone had an estimated budget of UGX 2.3 billion, making it one of the largest infrastructure projects in the area.
As part of her commitment to improving agricultural productivity, Minister Amongi has distributed hundreds of hoes to farmers in Lira City.

On February 28, 2025, she distributed hoes to residents of Amuca Ward in Lira City West Division, followed by another distribution event on March 1, 2025, at Anyomorem Primary School.
The hoes were distributed to farmers in nine cells in Anyomorem, Ngetta Ward, in Lira City West Division.
During the event, Amongi emphasized the importance of equipping farmers with the right tools to boost food production.
Residents expressed their gratitude, saying the hoes would help improve farming activities, especially among smallholder farmers who struggle to afford essential agricultural tools.
Apart from roadworks and agriculture, Amongi has also been active in economic empowerment programs. She has provided microloans worth UGX 1.5 billion to women in Lira City, supporting small businesses and household income generation.
The minister further announced the establishment of a youth vocational skilling centre, set to open on April 1, 2025.
The centre will train young people in various trades, including hairdressing, carpentry, welding, tailoring, and baking.
Amongi promised that those who excel would receive equipment to kickstart their businesses.
Additionally, she unveiled plans to set up a law firm that will provide free legal representation for community members facing legal challenges.
“Many people cannot afford lawyers to represent them in court. This firm will have professional lawyers ready to assist those in need,” she pledged.
Minister Amongi’s increasing involvement in Lira City has raised political speculation ahead of the 2026 elections.
Previously contesting in Oyam South, she recently transferred her voter location to Lira City, where she intends to run for the Woman MP seat.
“I shifted to Lira City because this is where I was married. I have come to serve and rally for votes from my people,” she declared.
She emphasized that her focus is on development rather than party politics, promising to continue working for all residents regardless of political affiliation.
Minister Betty Amongi Akena’s efforts in Lira City have made a significant impact, particularly in infrastructure, economic empowerment, and agriculture.
Her projects have been met with enthusiasm from the community, strengthening her political standing as she prepares for the 2026 elections.
