Museveni Breaks Ground for Akii-Bua Olympic Stadium, Promises More Sports Development

Lira, Uganda – President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has officially launched the construction of Akii-Bua Olympic Stadium in Lira City, fulfilling a long-awaited pledge to the people of Lango.

The groundbreaking ceremony, attended by First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports Hon. Janet Museveni, government officials and local leaders, marked a major milestone in Uganda’s sports development.

Speaking at the event, President Museveni reaffirmed his government’s commitment to sports infrastructure, now that the country has attained peace and economic stability.

“I’m a sportsman myself, but we had to first ensure peace and economic stability before prioritizing sports. Now, we can focus on growing sports, and we shall build similar stadiums in Gulu, Mbale, Arua, and Mbarara,” Museveni said.

He also assured Ugandans that Akii-Bua Stadium, Mandela National Stadium (Namboole) and Hoima Stadium would be ready in time for AFCON 2027, which Uganda is set to co-host.

To ease transportation, he announced plans for an airport in Gulu City and a shorter road link from Aboke to Bobi to Lira.

Lira City Mayor Sam Atul welcomed the President and the First Lady, hailing the stadium as a game-changer for the region’s economy and sports development.

“Your Excellency, this stadium fits perfectly within your vision for socio-economic transformation. Lira City remains the center of economic growth in Lango, and sports will play a crucial role in boosting local businesses and tourism,” Atul said.

He further appealed to the government to fast-track the development of Lira City and address key infrastructural needs.

“We request your support in establishing an international airport in Lira and equipping the city with road construction machinery. Unlike other local governments that received equipment, Lira City is struggling because we have none. We need these tools to enhance urban development,” he added.

Health Minister Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng, who is also the Woman MP for Lira City, praised the government’s commitment to sports and development but highlighted the need for additional support for local football clubs.

“Your Excellency, we appreciate this stadium, but our football teams face major challenges. Lango Province needs a team bus to facilitate travel for competitions. Right now, players rely on contributions from well-wishers, but it is never enough,” Aceng said.

She also requested more funding for local football clubs to support training, travel and equipment.

In response, President Museveni pledged to personally fund a bus for Lango Province’s team, saying, “When I return home, I’ll sell my cattle and send the money for the bus.” His remark drew applause from the crowd.

Hon. Janet Museveni commended her husband for keeping his promise to the people of Lango, emphasizing that Akii-Bua Stadium would be a center for talent development and youth empowerment.

“This stadium is not just about football; it’s about training our young people, instilling discipline, and creating opportunities. Uganda has incredible talent, and we must nurture it,” she said.

The groundbreaking of Akii-Bua Olympic Stadium marks a major milestone in Lango’s sports and economic transformation, setting the stage for greater investment in athletics and football ahead of AFCON 2027.
