Lira, Uganda | President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni is expected to visit Lango Subregion on April 18, 2026, for a high-level engagement with local leaders to discuss a newly developed five-year development agenda aimed at transforming the area.
The visit follows a strategic meeting convened on February 28, 2026, by the Paramount Chief of Lango, His Highness Eng. Dr. Michael Moses Odongo Okune, which brought together leaders across the political divide, including those who won and those who lost in the recently concluded elections.
During the meeting held at the Lango Cultural Centre, leaders unanimously agreed on a development vision for the subregion and tasked the cultural leader with formally engaging the president to present their priorities.
Odongo Okune emphasized the need for the government to prioritize Lango, noting that the subregion overwhelmingly supported Museveni in the recent polls.
Outgoing Dokolo South Member of Parliament Felix Okot Ogong urged the cultural institution to ensure the president meets Lango leaders collectively, arguing that the region’s massive support should translate into tangible development outcomes. He added that Lango registered the highest number of votes for Museveni in Northern Uganda.
Efforts to bring the President to the region have since been coordinated by the Prime Minister of Lango Cultural Institution, Prof. Willy Okullo, who has been engaging top government officials.
Addressing journalists, Okullo confirmed that Museveni had accepted the invitation and will meet leaders at Lango College, where discussions will center on peace, unity, and implementation of the development priorities agreed upon during the February meeting.
He noted that the engagement will also double as a thanksgiving prayer session, giving Lango leaders an opportunity to appreciate God for the president’s electoral victory and to thank him for his continued leadership.
Okullo added that preparations for the visit are underway, pending official communication from the central government to establish a joint organizing committee.
The Paramount Chief’s spokesperson, Patrick Okwir, said the meeting will serve as a platform for the president to directly address the people of Lango on issues of peace, reconciliation and development.
He revealed that among the key issues to be presented are increased appointment of Lango natives to senior government positions, tarmacking of major roads, and enhanced government investment in the subregion.
The anticipated visit is expected to provide a rare opportunity for leaders and residents of Lango to directly engage the president on their development aspirations and strengthen collaboration with the central government.
