Oyam, Uganda | Patrick Ogwang Obura, a senior member of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Secretariat, has officially declared his intention to contest for the Oyam South County parliamentary seat.
On Thursday, Obura picked up his Expression of Interest form from the NRM Electoral Commission offices in Kampala, marking a pivotal move in his bid to secure the party’s flag in the forthcoming primaries.
He expressed gratitude to the party leadership for upholding a transparent and structured process for aspiring candidates.
He noted that the number of people expressing interest in the race was a sign of a vibrant party and a strong democratic foundation.
Ogwang Obura, who was the NRM flag bearer for Oyam South in the 2016 elections, emphasized his long-standing commitment to community service despite not holding an elected parliamentary seat.
He reiterated his resolve to champion the needs of the people, particularly marginalized groups such as the youth, women, elders, veterans, teachers, and catechists, stating that many of these groups deserve more attention in terms of service delivery.
He pointed to various livelihood projects he has initiated across the constituency, underscoring his dedication to empowering residents through action and not just promises.
Obura joins nine other aspirants from Oyam District who have picked up interest forms to contest in the upcoming party primaries for various elective positions.
With a solid political background and experience within the NRM Secretariat, Obura believes he is well-positioned to effectively represent Oyam South in the 12th Parliament.
Meanwhile, the newly elected NRM District Chairperson for Oyam, Bosco Onyik Ogwal, applauded Obura and fellow aspirants for stepping forward, describing their enthusiasm as a reflection of the party’s strength and preparedness ahead of the 2026 general elections.
Onyik revealed plans to coordinate joint campaign activities among NRM aspirants in the district and encouraged dialogue to allow contenders to consider stepping down in favor of stronger candidates where necessary.
He emphasized the importance of promoting unity and love during the primaries and stressed that reconciliation, both before and after the elections, would be key to ensuring party cohesion in Oyam District.
The NRM primaries are expected to be closely watched in Oyam South, a constituency seen as politically strategic in the wider Lango Sub-region.
