Oyam, Uganda – Oyam District’s fight against Monkeypox experienced a setback as the taskforce committee, led by the Resident District Commissioner, missed their third scheduled meeting.
The meeting was aimed at discussing strategies to prevent the spread of the disease, following Oyam’s first confirmed case on November 9th.
The taskforce has not convened since their last gathering on November 6th and today’s meeting was postponed for unspecified reasons.
Questions are being raised about the commitment of the taskforce to tackle this public health emergency, as residents await updates on contact tracing and management efforts.
Dr. Patrick Omara Olwol of Anyeke Health Centre IV reported the recovery and discharge of the district’s first Monkeypox patient, who received psychological support and a sensitization program to mitigate potential stigmatization upon returning home.
In an effort to address concerns, Commissioner James Shielaku attributed the missed meeting to a scheduling conflict with another important healthcare event.
The absence of key stakeholders in the taskforce meeting sends a worrying message to the public.
As Oyam District continues to grapple with this emerging health crisis, the need for a proactive, cohesive response has never been greater.
