Lira, Uganda – Police arrested five suspects in connection with a mob justice incident that claimed the lives of Akullu Janet and Lingo Sam in Ayami Sub-County, Lira District, on December 19, 2024.

The killings followed allegations of food poisoning that led to the deaths of two juveniles, Ocuku Raymond (16) and Ocwa Abel (11).

The arrested suspects are: Okello Alfred, Clan Chief of Omolo Acol Odyek Onywal Iceng, accused of instigating the killings, Agwa Martin, LC-1 Chairperson of Ayere Village, Ocen Boniface, Okello Joel and Okello Anthony.

SP Jimmy Patrick Okema, the North Kyoga Police Spokesperson in a press briefing held at the Lira Central Police Station (CPS) on December 23, 2024, confirmed that several other suspects remain at large.

SP Okema urged those on the run to report to the nearest police station to assist with investigations.

Ojok Martin, another suspect in the case, was rescued by police from an irate mob that had sought to take justice into their hands.

The suspects currently in custody are detained at Lira CPS as investigations continue.

SP Okema highlighted that the alleged poisoning and subsequent mob action have raised serious concerns about public trust in formal justice systems.

“Taking the law into one’s own hands is not only illegal but counterproductive,” SP Okema stated. He urged the community to remain calm and allow the police to conclude investigations.

While emphasizing that North Kyoga is largely peaceful, SP Okema assured the public of heightened security during the festive season.

He outlined plans for increased patrols, intelligence-led operations and community collaboration to prevent criminal activities.

The police reiterated their commitment to upholding justice and maintaining order, appealing to citizens to report any suspicious activities promptly.

The public is encouraged to avoid mob actions and seek resolution through lawful means as investigations into the Ayami Sub-County incident continue.
