Apac, Uganda | Police in Apac District are investigating the suspected murder of a seven-month-old baby whose body was discovered half-buried in Apac Municipality, in a case that has shocked the local community.
The baby, identified as Awanyi Ezra, was a resident of Aboo Cell, Bardong Ward in Arocha Division, Apac Municipality.
According to police, the grim discovery was made on February 3, 2026, when children who had gone fishing and hunting in the area noticed a foot protruding from the ground and raised an alarm.
A resident, Okuta Maxwell, rushed to the scene and found a crowd already gathering.
He immediately alerted the area LC1 chairperson, Okello Tom Richard (65), who then reported the matter to Apac Central Police Station.
North Kyoga Regional Police spokesperson, SP Patrick Jimmy Okema, said preliminary findings indicate that the baby had gone missing on January 24, 2026, shortly after the elections.
“It is alleged that the child left home with his mother, Namboze Robinah, and a babysitter identified only as Monica, and they never returned,” SP Okema said.
The child’s father, Owino Mathew, reportedly made several efforts to trace them through relatives, but without success.
A team of detectives led by the Deputy District Criminal Investigations Officer, alongside the homicide unit, visited and examined the scene.
The District Scenes of Crime Officer documented the area before the body was retrieved and taken to Apac Main Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination.
Police say statements have been recorded from key witnesses, and efforts are ongoing to trace the child’s mother and the babysitter to help establish the circumstances surrounding the death.
SP Okema appealed for calm among family members and the public, assuring them that police are committed to ensuring justice.
“We appeal to anyone who may have information that could support the investigation to share it quietly with the police,” he said.
Investigations into the matter are ongoing, and police say further updates will be communicated as they become available.
