Police K9 “Pepper” Cracks Nansana Shop Break-In, Trails Suspects 1Km to Hideout

Wakiso, Uganda | Police in Nansana have arrested three suspects in connection with a robbery at a local businessman’s shop, following a dramatic one-kilometre trail by a sniffer dog.

The suspects, identified as Atwine, Mwange and Namara, were arrested on Friday by officers attached to Nansana Gganda Police Station after a break-in at the shop of Mbowa Joshua, a resident and businessman in Nansana Gganda.

According to preliminary police findings, Mbowa reported that when he opened his shop in the morning, he discovered that unknown assailants had cut through the iron sheets and ceiling board to gain access to the premises. The suspects allegedly stole cash and fled.

Police said the crime scene was well preserved, prompting officers to request reinforcement from the Kawaala Police K9 Unit to aid investigations.

A team of officers, accompanied by a police sniffer dog named Pepper, responded swiftly. The canine was introduced to the scene and successfully picked up a scent trail, which it tracked for about one kilometre.

The trail led officers to the residence of one of the suspects, where the dog reportedly zeroed in on Atwine and the two others.

During a search at the premises, police recovered a pair of scissors suspected to have been used to cut the iron sheets, a hammer, and a sum of cash believed to be part of the stolen money.

Investigations further revealed that the three suspects reside and sleep in the same house.

The suspects are currently detained at Nansana Gganda Police Station as investigations continue. Police said they are compiling evidence and preparing to charge the trio in court.
